in the movie, jack (played by the great jack nicholson) while supposed to be writing a novel actually writes pages and pages full of the text "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy", which represents the starting point of actual horror.
the text is the center of this design, blackness representing the dullness that life can take on - that is until we burn out and let the madness breach, much like jack in the famous "here comes johnny!" scene.
